15th Century Bill Drill

Discipline and training is the backbone of any army then as well as now. One medieval billman on a battlefield is not effective, but 20 working as a seamless unit is an incredible force to deploy to the battlefield.

Under the system of Livery and Maintenance a man was required to serve his lord in times of conflict as England did not have the professional standing army she enjoys today.

So in keeping with this spirit we will be asking children to take up arms and stand for their local lord as the Wars of the Roses storms across their community.

Our bill captain will train them to work together and defend the unit accordingly using the original Old English field commands of the day.

They will learn to attack, retreat, thrust, hack and defend as the 15th Century levied billman would have learned, under the guidance of a liveried freelance soldier of the time.

While having a serious message in the commentary this display is both fun and interactive for visitors of your show and gives a brief insight into some of the less chivalrous demands of medieval life..
