Elsecar Wartime Weekend to Return for 2009

Following the fantastic weekend event that took place at the railway this year confirmation has already been received that we will be staging the Elsecar Railway Wartime Weekend again for 2009 on the 5th & 6th of September.

Returning will be the explosive battle, the Fire Service Displays, the Baby Boot Camp, the military living history and everything we've had this year, plus new entertainers, more vehicles and as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities we're planning a whole different battle for the weekend.

Elsecar A Huge Success

In its fourth year the Elsecar Railway Wartime Weekend has established itself as a permanent and popular fixture in South Yorkshire Tourism.

People flocked from as far as Liverpool, Rugby, Durham and Devon to this hidden gem of the Barnsley area with so much going on packed into the site that many people came both days to capture the full experience.

At the end of the last day the rains came in with a vengeance but this did not stop the show and the crowds lined the side of the railway for the explosive battle demonstration and then defied the weather more to share a minutes silence for all those who died in the Second World War.

Spirits were lifted throughout the day by George Formby and the infamous Paul Harper along with a stirring speech by Churchill, and dancing led to the small hours in the Big Band Blitz Ball.

Three New Spectacles for West Yorkshire

Following the roaring success of the 1940s day at Ponderosa Farm Foreign Field has been invited to expand the event to an explosive weekend of wartime history to launch their expanded activity centre and military attractions.

In addition to this the Farm and Museum have commissioned 2 further events to commemorate the local history of the area.

Just 3 miles North lies the battlefield of Adwalton Moor where the Parliamentarian cause was all but wiped out in the North and 7 miles to the East lies the battlefield of Wakefield where, in 1461 Richard of York was killed mistakenly sallying out of Sandal Castle to face a superior Lancastrian army.

Both these sites are pivotal battles in the wider conflicts they represent and we are looking to stage them on an annual basis.

Tiger Tank Invades Trowbridge

Veterans Day Weekend brought out the crowds in Trowbridge to take part in the Town's celebrations. The centrepiece of this were the Foreign Field displays of both Axis and Allied forces, showing the veterans of old and what they went up against on both sides.

Central to this was the only working replica Panzer 6 Tiger tank in the UK which was fired daily as part of the Weaponry Demonstration.

The weather delivered glorious sunshine and crowds were thrilled with the displays staged.
